Fillings (Onlays & Inlays)

WHY DO YOU NEED FILLINGS?
  • If a tooth’s decay has caused a hole (cavity) to form on its surface
  • The cavity will continue to get worse with time
  • If not treated, can lead to infection, or bone loss
  • Eventually, all fillings need to be replaced due to everyday use

Dental inlays and onlays, also known as indirect fillings, are material bonded to the tooth to cover a large filling or damaged tooth. A dental inlay is applied to the center of the tooth’s surface, while a dental onlay covers the biting surface of the tooth (also known as the cusp). Inlays and onlays can be made with several materials, including gold, porcelain, or resin. For visible teeth, cosmetic and restorative dentists at CitiDental will usually recommend porcelain to maintain the appearance of the smile and resin for the molars, which will last longer against teeth grinding.
